  • Overview

    The Infrastructure group manage the day to day running; maintenance and governance of the technologies which underpin the business systems.  An exciting opportunity is available to join this group for a Microsoft Windows Server specialist who will help guide, manage and support the platform for the business.  The successful candidate will help shape the build; manage server delivery; server maintenance (including storage capacity; security patch and vulnerability remediation); technical authoring (including roadmap; documentation to support project deliveries and routine report creation for management review); application and release deployment and assisting the head of Infrastructure with the long term planning and direction setting of the platform as required.


    The Server team manage the lifecycle of the Microsoft Windows Server platform from build through maintenance and upgrade or decommission for all the major business applications used.  Whilst the key focus of the role will be on the management of the Splunk platform,  successful candidates will be expected handle ad-hoc Windows server based requests relating to the management of the platform.


    Applicants will need to demonstrate detailed knowledge and experience in managing a Windows Server environment (2008 and above) and the systems which support this platform (such as VMWare ESX 5.5+; Tivoli Storage Manage; IBM Tivoli Monitoring; LANDesk; McAfee VirusScan Enterprise / ENS and Splunk).   The applicant should have a good understanding of scripting preferably with PowerShell and be able to construct and deploy routine tasks through scripted automation confidently.  The applicant will preferably have 5+ years’ experience working in a financial or a similar ITIL framework aligned organisation and preferably have their experience backed up with an appropriate qualification (i.e. Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer qualified).


    The successful candidate will need to be able to plan tasks to ensure that deliverables are met to completed on time and to the required quality; be personable and approachable to help deliver the best outcome whether working alone or as part of a virtual team.  The candidate will need to demonstrate excellent written and communication skills to be able to convey technical plans to senior management or coach others in new skills required.


    Communication skills are a key requirement of the role as the successful candidate will be expected to create and maintain technical documentation to company standard & industry best practice; coach, mentor and train less experienced colleagues and convey (occasionally in non-technical terms) operational and strategic plans for senior management to support cost forecast, platform planning and end of software support / life direction.


    Generally we want a candidate with enterprise level exposure (rather than single server / small company work history)

    1. Balances technical fact / opinion against business risk / delivered service to provide well thought through information to support technical staff with incident; problem investigation and project decisions.
    2. Analyses work in progress, takes action to ensure targets are met within safety and quality procedures, including training and hand-over to colleagues where appropriate.
    3. Initiates investigation and proactive improvements for standard operating processes and procedures, utilising the current owned / licensed tools available, to evidence and escalate issues to the management team. Candidate should be comfortable in communicating with all levels of the management hierarchy.
    4. Can produce and interpret server performance and security log data to provide analysis for investigations; baseline for computer performance testing and can create trend reports for management to highlight areas of focus / improvement and on-going change.
    5. Plays a leading role in documenting, presenting and using direct communication to map software lifecycle, create work breakdown structures (WBS) and the appropriate supporting documentation to ensure that the software remains current and supportable without disruption to the organisation
    6. Works with the problem management function under the ITIL framework to investigate potential and actual service problems and recommends solutions. Follows formal procedures to plan and test proposed solutions.

    Functional / Technical competencies (Essential):

    1. Microsoft Windows Server (version 2008 and above) and VMWare ESX (version 5.5 and above).
    2. Identifies areas where improved management information can protect the delivery of service and works with others to define processes to routinely collect information and records. Reports and escalates unforeseen or exceptional events.
    3. Creates instructions or follows agreed plans to deliver change. Documents actions required for all tasks whether simple or complex; confirms correct functionality of installations; coaching others where required and advises supervisor and, if appropriate, users of progress.
    4. Uses data collected to build dashboards and reports for the customer to highlight information clearly.


    Functional / Technical competencies (Preferred):

    Experience working with or supporting the following technologies would be an advantage:

    1. McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 / ePO 4.5+
    2. SAN Storage (EMC and Hitachi)
    3. Red hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL version 6+)


    Work experience (Essential):

    1. Experienced supporting application and infrastructure servers in a large scale corporate environment including experience of supporting at least one current Microsoft Server operating system environment.
    2. Planning own work and the work of others (including third parties) to ensure delivery to time and cost.
    3. Experienced in working in a high pressure environment to deliver a first class BAU Service.
    4. Experience managing the Microsoft Windows Server OS, particularly in a virtual environment (preferably on a VMware platform)


    Work experience (Preferred):

    1. 5+ year’s experience of supporting Microsoft Windows server infrastructure in a large scale enterprise
    2. VMware experience, creating, maintaining and supporting the lifecycle of a virtual server.


    Education (Essential):

    1. Degree level qualification or equivalent level / recent technology focussed qualification.
    2. Familiar with the specific standards associated with an IT practitioner's current role: e.g. Health and safety standards; change management; incident management and problem management standards; and common service focussed frameworks such as ITIL Version 3.
    3. Good general knowledge of IT infrastructure (hardware, software, database, networking and cloud technologies).
    4. English language skills required for technical authoring of documents and creating of persuasive presentations.


    Education (Preferred):

    1. Degree level qualification or recent technology focussed qualification such as MCSE or CCA.
